The 2020 Future 50 Camp and Showcase, held at Strafford Sports Center on Sunday August 16th, was a huge success and overall a great experience for the players and their respective families! We saw a lot of great players from the area do their thing, with a good portion of the games being very competitive, particularly on the high school side. And now, we get to write about each of the players.
Here, we take a look at some of the older players on the boys side. This will be one of several parts we will be publishing over the coming days. The players for the most part are listed in order of the numbers they were assigned at the camp.
Bryce Gelle, 2021 Clever, 6’3 – Gelle is a lengthy guard who is very athletic. Fast and quick with good body control, he can flat out score. If he’s not driving to the basket, he’s knocking down 3’s. A quarterback in football, he can be a floor general in basketball as well. Sees the floor well and makes accurate passes. A recent growth spurt has helped Gelle rise to a whole new level of play and he should have a big senior year at Clever.
Lane Dunlap, 2021 Golden City, 5’11 – Dunlap is the feistiest player on the court, which is part of what makes him who he is. A very aggressive player who plays biggest than his size, he is both strong and fast. With his high motor and determination, he makes a big impact on any game he plays in. Can dribble from one end of the court to the other as fast as anyone out there and still finish under control, often drawing contact in the process. But he can also shoot the 3 accurately and can guard anyone on the court. A leader who sets the tone for others, his teams simply win… was instrumental in helping his Golden City team to the Class 1 final four last season and his team won the high school boys championship at the camp. There isn’t a school of any size that he would not stand out for. Go watch him and his Golden City squad play this coming season. You won’t be disappointed…
Eric Wilson, 2022 Hartville, 6’0 – Wilson was lauded for his athletic ability and incredible motor. From one of the best high school boys programs in the state, and it shows. He can do it all… score from deep, hit the mid range jumper, get to the rim, guard anyone on the other team and do it well. He can stay in front of the quickest guard on the other team, and then in the same possession go underneath and block the shot of a bigger player. Should be a major factor with defending Class 2 champ Hartville these next two seasons.
Blake Mepham, 2022 Conway, 6’3 – Mepham has impressive size and strength and showed that he can do a bit of everything. Can score at all 3 levels, hit the boards, play defense, and set up his teammates well. The consummate win first player who puts team goals ahead of personal stats and glory.
Jeffery Lung, 2021 Miller, 5’7 – Lung is a floor general who makes smart decisions on the court. He is a pass first point guard who is a coach on the floor type. Not a big time scorer but punishes teams that leave him open or who give him a lane to drive to the basket. Plays with a lot of energy and a hard nosed defensive player as well.
Caden Uthe, 2022 Southwest, 5’9 – Uthe can shoot from deep and loves to play in transition. Can make the tough layup going full speed. A high motor player who along with Cruz Marquez and Lucas Lakey gives Southwest an exciting back court to watch these coming seasons.
Joe Staton, 2023 McCauley, 5’0 – Staton is small but sneaky, he can drive to the basket, throw off bigger players with a quick move or two, and finish against them. He also has a nice looking shot from 3 and teams can’t leave him open. He’s very good at finding the open spots when he doesn’t have the ball. A high IQ player and a very fun player to watch.
Lucas Lakey, 2023 Southwest, 5’8 – Lakey is a gritty, aggressive guard with a solid all around game. Willing to guard the best player on the other team, a trait that coaches love. On offense, he can attack the rim aggressively and supplement that with an accurate three point shot.
Grant Givens, 2022 Glendale, 6’6 – Givens has very impressive size and length, he can stretch the defense out with his accurate 3 point shot but he can also play above the rim around the basket. He would get rebounds and immediately push it up court with the dribble or the pass. Will always make an impact on any game he plays in and should be fun to watch develop for Glendale these next two seasons.
