RICHLAND, Mo. — A 5’10 senior forward, Morgan Moss entered the 2017-18 season as one of the premier returning players in the Frisco League. A year ago, she helped the Lady Bears put together an 18-10 season and recently led the team to the championship game of the Frisco League Tournament where Licking prevailed, 66-57.
SWMOBasketball caught up with Moss and asked her about her team and her senior season:
SWMO — How would you describe your game to people who haven’t seen you play?
Morgan — I would describe my game as powerful. I am a powerful presence underneath with quick hands. I rarely miss a pass and I am able to follow through. I put everything on the floor.
SWMO — Tell us about your summer experience and how you grew as a player.
Morgan — During the summer I got the amazing opportunity to play with the Show Me Heat team and it was an awesome experience. I got to play with and against very talented girls which put lots of pressure on me to help my offense and defense, made me use my left hand, and also pushed me to work on my outside game. Lynn and TJ were amazing coaches, they took the time to help me improve as a player, and improve a person. Not only did they teach you how to become an awesome ball player they showed you respect, and modesty.
SWMO — Tell about the upcoming high school season, a little about your team and expectations.
Morgan — I am very excited about the upcoming season. We are very strong this year and return all five of our starters from last year. We have all been working very hard this summer in playing with each other and striving for greatness and improving individually. Our expectations for this year are to come out and become Conference and District champs. Last year we had a three way tie for conference champs with Licking and Newburg, and we also fell to Newburg for the District championship. We are now three weeks into practice and are very hungry this year.
SWMO — Who is the team or player that you look forward to playing this next season the most and why?
Morgan — I am looking forward to playing Licking this year. Last year we played them one time for our conference game and we came out on top. I think that they will be a very good team and our game should be a good one to come and watch. We are both very competitive and will leave everything on the floor.
SWMO — Who has been the biggest influence on your basketball career and tell us why?
Morgan — My biggest influence is my family. I have always loved to play basketball and they have always supported me and helped me with anything I needed. They run me back to the gym late at night so I can get more reps up. They made sure that I have the right basketball stuff to help improve my game and they drove me all over the United States to play games. In all the years I have played they have never missed a game.
SWMO — Who do you enjoy watching play basketball (professional, college, whoever) and why? Have you been able to take anything they do well and implement it in your own game?
Morgan — I don’t know that there is one person I have enjoyed the most to watch play. A few of the players I enjoyed most were Brittney Griner, Odyssey Sims, and Elena Delle Donne, Skylar Diggins, and Breanna Stewart. I watch the way these girls move and I look for different skills and moves to help step up my game.
SWMO — What are some things in your game you are working on?
Morgan — I’m working on becoming stronger with my left hand and being more confident with it. I am also working on my outside game so I can move out and shoot 15 footers when I’m open and be confident about it.
