With the season in the home stretch, SWMOBasketball takes a look at some of the area’s most talented small school scoring guards.
22-Ethan Fagre, 6’1, G, 2020, Richland (pictured)
A dominate player for Richland who can determine the outcome of a game. Fagre is a skilled player who brings athleticism, speed and leaping ability to the floor. He can be physical or finesse, depending on what he’s in the mood for. He’s a big time scoring threat who can shoot from deep and play above the rim. He’s also one of the top rebounders in the area. He finds position and jumps up to grab the ball before opponents have their feet set.
0-Tyler Campbell, 5’8, G, 2020, Crane
A crafty guard who can shoot from deep and get on the board with ease. Campbell has established himself as one of the top scorers in the area with a knack for finding separation at the perfect time. He has a nice feel for the floor at the point guard position. He can take opponents off the dribble, pass ahead on fast break looks and finish around the basket.
30-Drew Clary, 5’11, G, 2020, Alton
A skilled player with an eye for defensive schemes. Clary is a confident player who plays a patient game at a high level. He’s a thoughtful player. He’ll sacrifice his numbers if a teammate has a better look. That said, Clary can ball. He flies off screens and puts up shots in a hurry. He has the ability to penetrate, finish at the rim with a physical body in his path and knock down shots from down town.
3-Nathan Garrett, 5’7, G, 2020, Blue Eye
An electric guard who does everything a team could ask of a player. Garrett is a muscular guard who can dribble his way through a crowd and find his way inside. He has a good leaping ability and he isn’t afraid to challenge players who from the start. He can play flashy with behind the back passes or one handed floaters but he can also keep it simple and let the scoreboard do the talking. A composed player who keeps his opponent guessing.
0-Cole Gilpin, 6’3, G, 2020, Fair Grove
An impressive point guard who can run the floor and score in transition. Gilpin has excellent size and a solid frame. He uses his euro step when he’s on the move and can score in the face of defenders. He has a high release and a solid jumper. Gilpin runs Far Grove’s offense extremely well, passing ahead and making smart plays in half court settings. A tough player with a good upside.
4-Joe Hart, 5’9, G, 2020, Fordland
A potential threat from Fordland who can connect from deep and find a path inside. Another guard with good handles and confidence to come out on top in one-on-one situations. Hart can also play off the ball. He stays on the move and has been great this year at shooting off the catch and stopping to shoot before he gets too far inside. A smart player that can score, defend and run the show if he’s asked.
15-Zane Hodges, 5’8, G, 2020, Stoutland
Hodges is a smart player who can create for himself, others on his team and play off the ball. He a strong player for his size and fights to secure the ball and push the tempo. He plays with a chip on his shoulder and is shifty with the ball. Can shoot lights out from deep and he knows when it’s going in.
23-Holton Simmons, 5’11, G, 2020, Hartville
A defensive-minded player for Hartville who can shoot from deep and slip inside. Simmons has a flexible game as he adapts to specific situations and can even score off balance. He’s a bouncy player who can find his rhythm quickly and connect across the board. He has quick feet and good reflexes. Extremely fundamental. A high IQ player who can get in the head of his opponents and finish in transition.
Arlo Stump, 5’10, 2020, Golden City
You don’t hear a lot about Stump, but the 5’10 junior guard has already put together a monster career at Golden City, and he’s still got more than a year remaining. After putting together a strong summer playing for Joplin-area based Victory on the grassroots circuit, Stump has carried that success over to the season where he is averaging 29 points per game. Stump is more than just a scorer as he is averaging better than six rebounds and four assists per game this season.
25-Trevor Turner, 2020, Forsyth
A talented guard who plays hard on both ends of the floor. Turner brings a good combination of speed and strength to the floor which translates to fast break opportunities, extra passes and physical play in the paint. He’s a scrappy player who follows his shot and cleans up plays. He works hard on defense keeps his hands up and contests shots.
